Urgent problems

My garage door spring just broke. What should I do?

Leave the door where it is if you can, and don't try to lift it by hand or with the opener. A broken spring means the door's full weight is no longer balanced. Keep people clear, don't touch the springs or cables, and get quotes. Torsion springs store enough energy to cause serious injury. Leave spring and cable work to a trained technician.

My car is stuck in the garage. Can I open the door manually?

Only if the springs are intact and the door is balanced. With a broken spring, the door can be far heavier than it looks and may drop. Pull the opener's release cord only when the door is fully closed. If a spring is broken, call a company and mention the car is stuck so they can prioritize.

My garage door came off the track. Is it safe to use?

No. Stop using it and keep the opener off. A door off its track can twist, jam or fall, and the cables and springs are still under tension. Don't try to force the rollers back in. Local companies typically price off-track repair at $100 to $300 (Fixr, Jan 2025). See off-track and cable repair.

Why won't my garage door close, and why is the opener light blinking?

The most common cause is the photo-eye sensors near the floor. If they're dirty, bumped out of line or blocked, the opener won't close the door and may blink a light. Check that nothing is in the beam and the lenses are clean. If it persists, see safety sensor repair.

Can I get garage door repair at night or on a weekend?

Some local companies offer evening, weekend or emergency service, often at a higher rate (Fixr: +$100–$300). Mention urgency on your request and ask about after-hours fees. If the door is closed and secure, waiting for a regular weekday visit can save that surcharge. If it's stuck open or a car is trapped, say so.

Cost

How much does garage door repair cost in Delaware, Ohio?

It depends on the part. Published national guides list spring replacement at $120 to $540 across two sources, off-track repair at $100 to $300 and cable repair at $100 to $320 (Fixr Jan 2025; This Old House Mar 2026). These are estimates, not quotes. The cost guide has the full table and a calculator.

Do garage door companies charge a trip fee?

Many do. Fixr lists a typical service-call or trip fee of $50 to $75 (Jan 2025), sometimes credited toward the repair. Ohio rules generally require the company to tell you about trip, service-call or diagnostic charges at first contact, so ask before the visit is booked.

Should I replace both springs at once?

Many technicians recommend it when a door has two springs, because they usually went in together and have seen the same number of cycles. When one breaks, the other is often close behind. Replacing both can cost less than two separate visits. Ask for both prices in writing and decide.

Is a new garage door worth it instead of repairing?

Sometimes. A new single steel door runs $700 to $2,000 installed and a double $1,175 to $4,075 (Fixr, Jan 2025). If the door has several damaged sections, panels that can't be matched, or rot or rust, a new door may be the better spend. For a spring or cable on a solid door, repair is the norm.

Springs and openers

How long do garage door springs last?

Standard springs are commonly rated around 10,000 open-close cycles, roughly 7 to 14 years depending on how often the door runs. A household that uses the door four times a day reaches 10,000 cycles in about seven years. DASMA notes that rust and poor lubrication shorten spring life. More in how long springs last.

What's the difference between torsion and extension springs?

Torsion springs sit on a metal shaft above the door and twist to lift it. Extension springs run along the horizontal tracks on each side and stretch. Torsion systems are common on newer and heavier doors. Both store a lot of energy. See torsion vs extension springs.

Why do springs seem to break in winter?

Cold weather often reveals a worn spring. Grease thickens and rollers stiffen, so the system works harder on cold mornings. Columbus-area weather sees about 103 nights a year at or below freezing, with a January average low of 22°F (NOAA 1991–2020). A spring near the end of its life is more likely to give out then.

How long does a garage door opener last?

Fixr puts typical opener life at about 10 to 15 years. With Delaware County's median home built in 2000, many original openers are now in that range. Age alone doesn't mean replace, but parts availability, noise and missing safety features are good reasons to price a new one. See opener repair.

Do I need a battery backup opener in Ohio?

Ohio doesn't require one. California is the state that does, for openers sold there since 2019. A battery backup can still be handy if you lose power and park inside. Fixr lists a battery backup add-on at $75 to $175 (Jan 2025). Ask about it when you price a new opener.

Ohio rules, estimates and scams

Do garage door companies need a license in Ohio?

Ohio doesn't issue a state license for garage door companies. The state's construction trade licenses cover HVAC, refrigeration, electrical, plumbing and hydronics. Ask any company for proof of liability insurance, and ask your city or township whether it requires contractor registration.

What are my estimate rights in Ohio?

For repairs over $25, Ohio rules generally require the company to let you choose a written, oral or no estimate before work starts, and to tell you up front about trip, service-call or diagnostic charges (Ohio Adm. Code 109:4-3-05). Ask for a written estimate and an itemized bill. This is general information, not legal advice. More in your Ohio repair estimate rights.

Can I cancel a garage door contract I signed at home?

If you sign a contract at home, Ohio's Home Solicitation Sales Act generally lets you cancel until midnight of the third business day. Repairs you called the company out for are usually excluded, but extra products sold during that visit (like a new door or opener) may not be. Read the cancellation terms before you sign.

How do I spot a garage door repair scam?

Be cautious with ads promising very low service-call fees, listings with no local address, unmarked vehicles, or requests for large upfront cash deposits. The BBB (March 2026) warned that many scams advertise a low service-call fee and then demand more. Get a written estimate first. See garage door repair scams in Ohio.

New doors and HOAs

Do I need a permit to replace a garage door?

Most repairs don't need a permit, but a new door, and especially a resized opening, may. Rules differ in the City of Delaware, Delaware County's townships, and cities like Powell, Westerville and Dublin. Ask your installer or building department. Unincorporated townships use Delaware County Building Safety, while the City of Delaware has its own Building Division.

Does my HOA need to approve a new garage door?

In HOA communities, check architectural guidelines before changing door style, color or windows. Many HOAs in Powell, Lewis Center and Sunbury review exterior changes, and some exempt like-for-like replacements. Ask the HOA before you order. More in HOA garage door rules.

Is an insulated garage door worth it in central Ohio?

It can be, especially for an attached garage you use as a workshop or that shares a wall with living space. Fixr lists an insulated single door at $700 to $2,300 installed (Jan 2025). Insulated doors also tend to be quieter and stiffer. Savings depend on the house, so treat energy claims cautiously.
