Door stuck right now?

  • Don't force it. If the door won't move with the opener, stop pressing the button. Repeated tries can strain the opener and the door.
  • Don't touch springs or cables. Torsion springs store enough energy to cause serious injury. Leave spring and cable work to a trained technician.
  • Pull the opener's release cord only if the door is fully closed. On a door that is open or partly open, a broken spring can let it drop hard once the opener lets go.
  • Keep people and pets clear, and leave the car where it is if the door is crooked or hanging.
  • Call or send a request. Say what the door is doing and whether a car is stuck inside.

Some local companies offer evening, weekend or emergency service, often at a higher rate (Fixr: +$100–$300). Mention urgency on your request and ask about after-hours fees. Talk it through by phone: (740) 471-1706

Garage door services Delaware County homeowners ask about

Each guide explains what is likely going on, what a technician typically does, what published prices look like and what to ask before you hire.

How it works

Three steps. No fee, no account, no obligation.

  1. Describe the problem

Tell us what the door is doing, roughly how old it is, whether it's a single or double door and whether a car is stuck inside. It takes a couple of minutes on the form or by phone.

  2. Local companies reply

Independent garage door companies that serve your part of Delaware County can call, text or email you with questions and a quote or a visit time. Each company sets its own schedule.

  3. You compare and choose

Ask each company for a written estimate and its trip or diagnostic fee, compare them, and hire whoever you trust, or no one. Delaware Garage Door Pros never charges you.

Know your Ohio estimate rights

Ohio estimate rule. For repairs over $25, Ohio rules generally require the company to let you choose a written, oral or no estimate before work starts, and to tell you up front about trip, service-call or diagnostic charges (Ohio Adm. Code 109:4-3-05). Ask for a written estimate and an itemized bill. This is general information, not legal advice.

That rule matters with garage doors because the first number you hear is often a service-call fee, and the real cost shows up once a technician sees the door. Ohio's rules generally say any trip or diagnostic charge should be disclosed at first contact, and that the company should get your OK before going well past an estimate. Read more in your Ohio repair estimate rights.

Signing at home? If you sign a contract at home, Ohio's Home Solicitation Sales Act generally lets you cancel until midnight of the third business day. Repairs you called the company out for are usually excluded, but extra products sold during that visit (like a new door or opener) may not be. Read the cancellation terms before you sign.

About licenses: Ohio doesn't issue a state license for garage door companies. The state's construction trade licenses cover HVAC, refrigeration, electrical, plumbing and hydronics. Ask any company for proof of liability insurance, and ask your city or township whether it requires contractor registration.

Why garage doors wear out around here

Young houses, a lot of them, and cold mornings. Census and NOAA numbers explain why spring and opener calls are so common in Delaware County.

A big wave of 1990s to 2010s homes

Delaware County's median home was built in 2000, compared with 1970 for Ohio as a whole. About two-thirds of the county's homes went up between 1990 and 2019 (ACS 2020–2024). Many of those houses got builder-grade doors, springs and openers at the same time, and plenty are still on the originals or a second set.

Standard springs are commonly rated around 10,000 open-close cycles, which works out to roughly 7 to 14 years depending on how often the door runs. Openers usually last about 10 to 15 years (Fixr). For a lot of homes here, both numbers are now in play.

Still growing fast

The county grew from 214,141 people in 2020 to 242,032 in 2025, up 13.0%, second in Ohio by percentage after Union County (Census estimates). Delaware, Ohio itself reached 46,636, up 12.9%. New subdivisions bring new doors, smart openers and HOA rules about style and color.

Cold mornings find the weak spring

NOAA's 1991–2020 normals for the Columbus airport, the nearest station with a full record, show about 103 nights a year at or below freezing and a January average low of 22°F. Cold thickens grease and stiffens rollers, so the door and opener work harder. Cold weather often reveals a worn spring that was already near the end of its life.

The door industry group DASMA notes that rust and poor lubrication shorten spring life. Road salt carried in on cars and damp winter garages don't help. A yearly tune-up and a monthly safety check are cheap ways to catch problems early.

Older homes have their own issues

The City of Delaware still has a historic core, with about 22% of homes built before 1960, plus plenty of 2000s subdivisions. Older homes may have detached garages, heavier doors or openers made before the 1993 federal safety rule that requires a backup safety system such as photo eyes.

Garage door repair questions

Is Delaware Garage Door Pros a garage door company?

No. Delaware Garage Door Pros is a free quote-matching service. You describe the problem once, and independent garage door companies that serve Delaware, Ohio and nearby towns can contact you with quotes. We don't do repairs, set prices or employ technicians. The company you choose is responsible for its own work, estimate and warranty terms.

How much does garage door spring replacement cost near Delaware, Ohio?

Two published guides put it at $120 to $350 (Fixr, Jan 2025, with torsion springs $200 to $350) and $300 to $540 (This Old House, Mar 2026). These are national estimates, not quotes. Spring size, whether both springs are replaced and after-hours timing all move the price. See the cost guide.

Can I replace a garage door spring myself?

We don't recommend it. Torsion springs store enough energy to cause serious injury. Leave spring and cable work to a trained technician. Spring work involves winding bars, set screws and cables under tension, and mistakes happen fast. If a spring breaks, leave the door closed if you can and get quotes from local companies.

Do garage door companies need a license in Ohio?

Ohio doesn't issue a state license for garage door companies. The state's construction trade licenses cover HVAC, refrigeration, electrical, plumbing and hydronics. Ask any company for proof of liability insurance, and ask your city or township whether it requires contractor registration.

What should a garage door repair estimate include in Ohio?

Ohio rules generally let you choose a written, oral or no estimate for repairs over $25, and require trip, service-call or diagnostic charges to be disclosed up front (Ohio Adm. Code 109:4-3-05). A good written estimate lists parts, labor, any trip fee and warranty terms. Ask for an itemized bill at the end.

Can I get evening or weekend garage door repair?

Some local companies offer evening, weekend or emergency service, often at a higher rate (Fixr: +$100–$300). Mention urgency on your request and ask about after-hours fees. A car stuck inside or a door that won't close is worth mentioning in the details box.
