Delaware Garage Door Pros doesn't set prices, and none of these numbers is a price from any company. They're here so the first quote you hear doesn't come as a surprise. Older local price pages online often rely on data that is years out of date, so we stick to recent, dated national guides and say plainly that local quotes vary.
The Ohio estimate rule comes first
For repairs over $25, Ohio rules generally require the company to let you choose a written, oral or no estimate before work starts, and to tell you up front about trip, service-call or diagnostic charges (Ohio Adm. Code 109:4-3-05). Ask for a written estimate and an itemized bill.
In practice, that means three questions on the first call: Is there a trip or diagnostic fee, and how much? Will I get a written estimate before you start? Will the final bill list parts and labor separately? A company that answers those clearly is easier to compare with the next one. If the work grows past the estimate once the door is open, Ohio's rule generally requires the company to get your OK first. This is general information, not legal advice. Read more in your Ohio repair estimate rights.
Signing at home? If you sign a contract at home, Ohio's Home Solicitation Sales Act generally lets you cancel until midnight of the third business day. Repairs you called the company out for are usually excluded, but extra products sold during that visit (like a new door or opener) may not be. Read the cancellation terms before you sign.
What drives garage door repair cost
- Spring type and count. Torsion springs sit on a shaft above the door and usually cost more than extension springs along the tracks. Many doors use two, and companies often suggest replacing both so the door stays balanced. See torsion vs extension springs.
- Door size and weight. A double door with insulation, windows or a wood-look overlay is heavier. Heavier doors need larger springs and sometimes stronger cables and rollers.
- Parts quality. Standard springs are commonly rated around 10,000 cycles. Higher-cycle springs cost more up front and may last longer in a busy household. Ask which you're being quoted.
- After-hours timing. Evening, weekend and emergency visits often carry a surcharge, which Fixr puts at $100–$300.
- Trip fee. A service-call fee of $50–$75 (Fixr) may be separate or folded into the repair. Ohio rules generally require it to be disclosed up front.
- Matching older parts. Panels for a 1990s or 2000s builder door may be discontinued, which can push a panel job toward a full door.
- Permits for new doors. Most repairs don't need a permit, but a new door, and especially a resized opening, may. Rules differ in the City of Delaware, Delaware County's townships, and cities like Powell, Westerville and Dublin. Ask your installer or building department.

Repair or replace?
Most calls end in a repair. These are the signs a full door or new opener is worth pricing too.
Usually a repair
- One broken spring, a frayed cable or a door that slipped off its track
- Noisy or worn rollers and dry hinges (see noisy door repair)
- Photo eyes out of line, or an opener with a failed remote or wall button
- A single dented panel on a door model that is still available
Worth pricing a replacement
- An opener near or past 10 to 15 years old, or made before 1993 with no photo eyes (see opener repair vs replace)
- Several damaged sections, or panels that can't be matched
- A door that is warped, rusted through or badly out of balance after repairs
- A plan to change style or add insulation anyway (see new door installation)
A fair way to decide: ask for both numbers in writing. If the repair comes to a large share of a new door's price on an old door, replacement may be the better spend. If it's a spring on a solid door, repair is the normal answer. In HOA communities, check architectural guidelines before changing door style, color or windows.
Avoiding surprise bills
Be cautious with ads promising very low service-call fees, listings with no local address, unmarked vehicles, or requests for large upfront cash deposits. The BBB warned in March 2026 that many garage door scams advertise a low service-call fee, then demand more money for added repairs. In May 2026 the FTC brought a case alleging thousands of fake online listings for local home-repair businesses, including garage door repair. In 2022, the Ohio Attorney General sued a Cleveland-area garage door company over deposits taken for doors that were never delivered. Get a written estimate first, and see garage door repair scams in Ohio for more.
Ohio doesn't issue a state license for garage door companies. The state's construction trade licenses cover HVAC, refrigeration, electrical, plumbing and hydronics. Ask any company for proof of liability insurance, and ask your city or township whether it requires contractor registration.
Garage door cost questions
How much does it cost to fix a garage door spring in Delaware, Ohio?
Published national guides put spring replacement at $120 to $350 (Fixr, Jan 2025; torsion $200 to $350) and $300 to $540 with an average near $420 (This Old House, Mar 2026). Local quotes vary with spring size, whether both springs are replaced, the door's weight and after-hours timing. Ask for a written estimate before work starts.
What is a garage door service call fee?
Fixr lists a typical trip or service-call fee of $50 to $75 (Jan 2025). Some companies fold it into the repair price and some charge it separately. Ohio rules generally require the company to tell you about trip or diagnostic charges at first contact, so ask about it when you call.
Why are two spring price ranges so different?
The guides measure slightly different things at different times. Fixr's $120 to $350 (Jan 2025) includes cheaper extension spring jobs, while This Old House's $300 to $540 (Mar 2026) reflects installed prices with parts. Torsion springs on a heavy double door sit toward the top of both. Your quote depends on your door.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
Usually repair. Most spring, cable, roller and opener fixes cost a few hundred dollars, while a new single steel door runs $700 to $2,000 installed (Fixr, Jan 2025). Replacement starts to make sense when several sections are damaged, the door is badly out of shape, or panels for an older model can't be matched.
Do I pay extra for evening or weekend repair?
Often, yes. Fixr lists an after-hours or emergency surcharge of $100 to $300 on top of the repair (Jan 2025). Some local companies offer evening or weekend service and some don't. Mention urgency on your request and ask each company to state any after-hours fee before it comes out.
